Cheesy title right?
Lol I thought so too. But that’s not the point of this blog post.
I’ve always wanted to be a beautician. I’ve always done something hair related. When I was younger I always said that I wanted to be lawyer, a hairstylist, and own my own salon, and boutique. Always.
But as I got older, some people would tell me that I “couldn’t do both” and “doing hair doesn’t make money”. So I went to college and I got a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology. But In my third year in college, I had doubts that maybe this wasn’t what I was supposed to do. I later found out that its not really what I’m supposed to do (i’ll write another post about finding my purpose later).
I graduated from high school in 2009 and started college that September. While in college, I had a plan to go to college and become a hairstylist to make money on the side. When I first signed up for the program I didn’t get in. The program fills up fast! Like super fast! But a girl I was in a summer program with had a mother who was an instructor and she called me back and asked me to come back the same day. She asked me if I could get my materials by Monday and I told her yes I could.
Hair school was fun, but at times it was too much for my liking LOL. Girls and their cattiness just don’t mix well with me. But I promise that the good always outweighed the bad.
I was very excited to start school. I was amazed at all the things I was learning and all that being a hair stylist included. When I was studying, it amazed me how people really couldn’t wrap their minds around me having to study for tests and having homework. All this came so natural to me and I was excited to learn things. I will add that I DID NOT have any hair experience prior to going to hair school. A lot of the ladies had went to other beauty institutes. I read an article while I was in school that said you excel quickly at subjects you are interested in. I exceled greatly, I was on the deans list the whole time and I was still completing my prerequisites for undergrad.
I went into school wanting to know everything there was to know. I wanted to specialize in hair cutting and hair coloring. That’s what I enjoyed doing the most. I made sure to try to style different hair textures to see what worked and what didn’t.
After I completed the program, it took a long time to get my license (3 years to be exact). But once I got them I created a plan for myself and decided to work the plan (Ill soon write another post about working in the industry later also).
I am not nearly where I want to be in my career but I am striving for better everyday. It is no easy feat \, but as with any thing, its worth the fight!
